Violations are the lowest level offense of the law in New York State.  Although a violation is technically not considered a crime, it could still result in hefty fines, and even possible jail time if you are convicted.  The maximum jail sentence for a violation is 15 days, however, that is usually an unlikely outcome unless you have a bad criminal history.
